THE COURSE

 

"The Isle of Barra Golf Course is the most westerly golf course in the United Kingdom.This small yet perfectly formed course, with fantastic views over the Atlantic Ocean, lies on the west coast of the Isle of Barra, in the Western Isles of Scotland. Barra Golf Club was established in 1992. Situated at Cleat, near the Isle Of Barra Hotel and 6 miles from Castlebay. The 9 hole course is 2396 yards and has elevated links with natural contours. On machair land, the natural turf provides an excellent playing surface. Green fees are payable at local hotels. The visitor daily rate is £10.00 and membership is also available.

GETTING TO BARRA

 

The main route to Barra is by CalMac ferry from Oban, on the mainland. The crossing takes 4 hours 50 minutes. You can also get a ferry to Barra from Lochboisdale on South Uist, which takes 2 hours 5 minutes. A shorter hop from Eriskay to Barra takes 40 minutes. Vehicle reservations are recommended.

 

By train, if you're coming from the east coast, Edinburgh, or the South, you'll need to travel through Glasgow. There's a regular direct train to Oban from Glasgow Queen Street Station, and it takes just over 3 hours. The bus route to Oban from Glasgow takes just under 3 hours, traffic permitting. The bus from Inverness to Oban takes 3 hours 30 minutes, with a change at Fort William. By car It takes 2 hours 30 minutes to drive to Oban from Glasgow, 3 hours from Edinburgh, 4 hours from Aberdeen, and 2 hours 45 minutes from Inverness.
